Presentation Summary

The presentation introduced the practice problem of Alzheimer’s disease, including definition, prevalence, health impacts, and its association with falling risks. My preceptor suggested that Alzheimer’s disease has several dementia stages (Alzheimer’s Association, n.d.). This suggestion was incorporated into cognitive impairments’ health impacts that increase the risks of falls among Alzheimer’s patients. The presentation introduces the proposed intervention – Demonstration-based nurse training and patient education to prevent and reduce falls among Alzheimer’s patients, highlighting the evidence-based support for the practice change.

Furthermore, the presentation highlighted the existing fall prevention gaps in literature and practices in Alzheimer’s units while highlighting other relevant fall prevention areas that are supported in existing scientific literature. As suggested by the preceptor, the project’s demonstration-based education components for nurses and patients were adopted from the existing literature on fall prevention and reduction among dementia patients in mental health facilities.  Consistently, the presentation outlines the proposal objectives and the resources needed to achieve them. Lastly, the presentation highlights the measurable outcomes that would determine its success and the project’s progress and success evaluation measures.

During the presentation, I was asked about the stages at which a patient would contribute to falling prevention and reduction. While my presentation did not incorporate such a critical aspect of the proposal, I would have emphasized this and elaborated at which stage the patient is likely to participate in the fall prevention continuum considering the progressive decline in cognitive impairment. In this case, Alzheimer’s patients can participate effectively in fall prevention and reduction practices during the early stage of Alzheimer’s disease and limitedly in the middle stage of Alzheimer’s disease (Alzheimer’s Association, n.d.). However, patient participation would be significantly impaired during late-stage Alzheimer’s, requiring comprehensive support and assistance.

Altogether, preceptor collaboration, project presentation, and audience questions contributed to the efficacy of my presentation and consequently changed my perception of scientific research and evidence presentation. In my professional practice, I will embody collaboration as a crucial assessment to achieving evidence-based practice in clinical settings. Moreover, input from peers and senior professionals with likened scientific interests and expertise is critical for ascertaining the success and need for improvement in a given project. These aspects would enhance my contribution to scientific knowledge and practice.
